Sailing a Tall Ship around the Hebridean Islands is in itself an amazing experience, doing it with the express purpose of realising epic downwind runs and exploring new riding spots is an exceptional once in a lifetime adventure!
The vessel is a 102ft Steel Hull Brigantine that is particularly well suited to these waters, she is seaworthy and cosy with a good amount of deck space for storing the mountain of equipment that 14 riders require. The captain has sailed these water for over 30 years and together with your guides will put us in the right place at the right time to make best use of whatever the weather may bring. The many islands provide calm protected anchorages every night to make sure every one gets a good nights sleep ready for the next days adventures.
Our itinerary is completely flexible, the only fixed aspects are the start and finish. Essentially we load the equipment and sort out everyone on the Sunday in Oban and return the following Saturday. The onboard Chef produces three hearty meals a day, snacks are always available and the bar provides lubrication to recount the tall tales at the end of the day.
Your guides are pioneers in Scottish downwinding and will provide coaching throughout the trip where required. Downwinding requires a different skillset to normal winging so each evening we debrief the riders and identify any aspects that can be improved upon to ensure that everyone is becoming more proficient throughout the trip. Of course if you are already an experienced downwinder you’ll just be able to just connect the never ending bumps in world class conditions.
Although the trip has a very adventurous feel we take everyones safety very seriously and as such have developed some very thorough protocols for managing the team including the provision of a powerful jetski with rescue sled that can be used for coaching, filming and retrieve. Many of the participants on the first expedition commented that having it in close attendance gave them the confidence to ride in places they’d never dreamt of.
